…There is a road, no simple highway

April 21, 2023

For those of you interested, later today I will post a blog with some statistics of our trip. In the meantime how about a little ghost story. [insert evil chortle here ~ mwahahaha, muwhahaha, muahahaha, bwahahaha]

They say the lake is haunted. That’s right we spent the night an arm’s length from Lake Sidney Lanier. The body part reference is deliberate. They say divers in this manmade reservoir feel detached limbs in these murky waters.

So here’s the story ~ like most manmade reservoirs ~ the inhabitants of the lowlands were relocated to higher ground. While the living moved and their homes, churches and businesses were dismantled, the engineers also moved century old graves. Or did they?

According to the locals, there’s a Lady of the Lake who appears in a borrowed blue dress and reaches out to grasp at the living and pull them down into the murky water depths.

Check out this article in Oxford American – thanks Kelli for sharing the link!

There’s no doubt that the heartache of such great losses continues to echo through the area. I am certain that the making of our own Quabbin Reservoir in western Massachusetts was disconcerting and disruptive when they diverted the flow of the Swift River. As we continue on our venture and try to seek roads less travelled, we are awed by the beauty of the landscape and the history of the people.

Thanks for reading and please leave a question or comment, and I promise to respond. Starting to get the hang of this blog life.

Keeping the rubber side down,
