Today!
Happy Mother’s Day!
These days-it is easier to remember the day of the week versus the date on a calendar.

After our venture off road in El Malpais and a very short stay at a “graveyard” RV Park, we toured the National Parks nearby and landed a site at one too! In Winslow, Arizona – I cannot even say that town and state without singing –
Well, I’m standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona
And such a fine sight to see
It’s a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford
Slowin’ down to take a look at me
Okay, now you are on your own and singing the rest of this iconic Eagles tune. You’re welcome.

Well, we are not exactly on a corner, but do hope to check out downtown Winslow tomorrow – we are at a National Park site like no other – Homolovi – where we have respectful and trusting access to the ruins of the Hopi people.

As I said, we did drive the 26+ miles through the painted and the petrified. However, the one image that will most stay with us was our encounter with Mario and John – two cyclist cooling off in the shade at the Visitors Center veranda.

While we planned a deliberate tourist visit to The Petrified Forest, we certainly did not expect to meet two fellow travelers on a quest to spread kindness.

KINDNESS!!!
Rob was slowing down behind me and I knew why too. There they were with poise and grace – resting and receiving their audience of admirers filled with wonder and awe at the gumption of these two touring cyclists. Mario and John – who Rob later learned were on their way to the Transcontinental highway with an end goal of North Carolina! The wind is at their backs at least – much better to travel at 120 miles a day versus 20!

The drive was grand along the route through this vast landscape with designated hikes along the route – not for us today. We enjoyed thinking of RT 66 back in the day, but we had a mission to find a tent spot.

Homolovi is a first come first served Campground until May 15 – We were thrilled to get a spot and settle in for a long weekend of exploring.

A friend of Rob’s – not a fan – but totally cool.
Until next time – we are desert dwellers and we have no complaints!
Keeping the rubber side down, Julie and Rob
