Through the Panhandle to Sandpoint

June 3, 2023

Yesterday we drove through the small town of Leavenworth to a charging station at the local A&P. We quickly became enamored with this quaint Bavarian-style village. There’s a road sign that announces the route as the “gateway to the Alps”. The road winds along through the Cascade Mountains. Today in Spokane, we encountered this Holy Schnitzel! billboard – I happened to snap one picture yesterday – It’s the same hotel advertised in the billboard.

We had a restful evening in George, Washington and drove for a few hours to Spokane to charge up for the rest of today’s road trip into Idaho and then beyond.

Sandpoint, Idaho is noted on Rob’s cycling route, curiosity led me to navigate to this small historic town on our way to Glacier National Park. The Welcome sign reminds visitors that Sandpoint is a foot traffic town, so please yield to walkers. Also, it is a cycle friendly town with a two lane dedicated bike path over the Pend Orville River.

Unknown to us – Gloria and I found our way on one of the 32 All-American Road National Scenic Byways. The Selkirk Loop is a 280 scenic byway winding through Washington, into Idaho and circling into British Columbia and back around into Washington. Tomorrow we will continue into Bonners Ferry on our way to camp in Glacier National Park.

In closing today I post a train engine picture that we would like to dedicate to Rob – who we all know likes trains!

Keeping the rubber side down, Julie and Gloria
