Memorable Memorial Day and Beyond

May 30, 2023

Coastal views all day as we travel this Memorial Day weekend to visit with family and friends from Mountain View, California to Ocean Park, Washington.

We travelled north through Oregon along Rt 101 after spending one night in Roseburg. This coastal highway is over 360 miles long and we travelled over 200 of those miles and crossed over the Columbia River into Washington.

Our destination for the next two days was a small coastal town on the Long Beach Peninsula called Ocean Park. In March, Rob shipped his touring bike and trailer to a friend who lives here with his dad. Steve and his dad, Lester, were amazing hosts! Lester built his beautiful coastal home over 30 years ago and continues to enjoy the sea air! We relished this respite from road travel along with home cooked meals and stories galore.

Lester’s house shares a property line with the Pacific Pines State Park and we followed a woodland path that led straight to the dunes.

Rob met Steve’s landscaper while
packing up the bikes!

There is over 25 miles of shoreline in their backyard!

We fell asleep to the sound of the crashing waves thundering into shore over a long flat clam rich sea bed.

Working on my Window Photography as we make our way inland. We are headed to Seattle for a stop at the REÍ Flagship Store. Then we prepare to part ways. Rob heads North on a short [50 mile] bike ride to Anacortes to make sure all is in working order. I will miss him, but I’m looking forward to being reunited with my bestie, Gloria, whose plane arrives in Seattle tomorrow evening. We will officially launch Rob on Friday morning from the beach at Anacortes, Washington.

A sliver of Washington showing Anacortes in red.

Tonight I will set up a separate blog site that will be linked directly to the PanCan Peddlers site and will follow Rob’s progress along the routes published by Adventure Cycling. This blog will continue to document my ride with the RIVIAN as Gloria and I venture into Glacier National Park and then on to Yellowstone and beyond!

Keeping the rubber side down, Julie and Rob
